Onitsuka Tiger started in 1949 by Kihachiro Onitsuka, in Kobe, Japan. After successfully producing athletic shoes for Japan’s Olympic team, the company later merged two other equipment makers to become the better-known Asics Corporation. Asics would continue on, producing high performance running shoes that were popular worldwide.
During the downturn of Japan’s economy in the early to mid 90’s, Asics hit hard times. In 2000, they decided to revive the company by turning to the brand label that gave them so much success in their past. The Onitsuka Tiger brand was put back on store shelves and met the blossoming retro footwear market with outstanding success.
Today, Onitsuka Tiger shoes can be found at dozens of Onitsuka Tiger boutiques in Japan, and in major fashion centers around the world, including London, Paris, and Sydney.
